Gooding is a city in Idaho, United States. It is the largest city and the county seat of Gooding County. A county seat is the main town where the local government offices are located. In 2010, the city had a population of 3,567 people.

The city was named after Frank R. Gooding. He was a local sheep rancher who became an important leader in Idaho. He served as the Governor of Idaho and later as a United States Senator. Before it was named Gooding, the city was called Toponis.

Gooding is home to the Idaho School for the Deaf and the Blind. It also has the world's largest factory for barrel cheese. This factory makes the main ingredient for processed cheese. Gooding also has its own Gooding High School and Gooding Middle School.

Gooding's Location and Climate

Gooding is located near where two rivers meet. These are the Big Wood River and the Little Wood River. They join together to form the Malad River.

The city covers a total area of about 1.49 square miles. Most of this area (1.48 square miles) is land. Only a small part (0.01 square miles) is water.

Education in Gooding

Gooding has several schools for students of all ages. There are six schools in total. Four of these schools are part of the Gooding Joint School District. There is also the North Valley Academy charter school. The Idaho School for the Deaf and the Blind is also located here.

The College of Southern Idaho has a center in Gooding. This allows local students to take college courses close to home. Gooding also has a public library for everyone to use.

Gooding Joint School District

The Gooding Joint School District runs three schools. These are Gooding Elementary School, Gooding Middle School, and Gooding High School. The school district mainly serves Gooding County. It also includes a small part of Lincoln County.

About 1,200 students attend schools in this district. It is one of the larger school districts in Idaho. The district was recognized for using technology well. This includes using technology to manage the district and talk with students, parents, and the community.

The Gooding School District was the first in the nation to win a "Gold Award of Distinction" from the HealthierUS Challenge. This award recognizes schools that promote healthy eating and physical activity.

North Valley Academy

The North Valley Academy is a charter school. It was approved in December 2007. The school started with classes for Kindergarten through eighth grade in 2008. It later added grades 9-12 in 2009.

Idaho School for the Deaf and the Blind

The Idaho School for the Deaf and the Blind (ISDB) helps students who are deaf or blind. It was first started in 1906 in Boise. After a fire in 1908, the school moved to Gooding. Governor Frank Gooding donated land for the school. It began accepting students in Gooding in September 1910.

The school is built on a 40-acre area. It has dormitories where many students can live. It also has other facilities like a gymnasium and a park.

Gooding College History

Gooding College was a school that operated in the city from 1917 to 1938. It offered both high school and college courses. In 1928, it had its largest number of students, with 209 enrolled.

Some of the college buildings were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. One building from 1920 still stands today. It was used as a hospital in 1946 and later became an inn.
