Gooroolba's History
How Gooroolba Got Its Name
The name Gooroolba comes from an older, longer name: Gooroolballin. This name was first used for a large sheep farm called "Gooroolballan" station. This farm was already set up by 1857.
The Railway Arrives
In 1906, a railway line was extended to Gooroolba. This made it easier for people and goods to travel to and from the town.
Schools and Post Office
A post office opened in Gooroolba around June 1910. Before that, a smaller "receiving office" had been open since 1907. The post office closed in 1973.
Gooroolba State School welcomed its first students on April 18, 1911. It taught children for many years before closing in 1964.
There were also two other small schools nearby: Mingo Crossing Provisional School and Allawah Provisional School. They opened in 1913. For a while, they shared one teacher, meaning the teacher taught at one school part of the time and then at the other. Mingo Crossing closed around 1915, and Allawah closed in 1917.
A Big Storm
In 1917, a very strong cyclone hit Gooroolba. It caused a lot of damage! The town's public hall was completely destroyed. The local hotel and two shops were also badly damaged.
Remembering War Heroes
Near the railway crossing in Gooroolba, there is a special memorial. It was first built to honor the people from the area who served in World War I. Later, the names of those who served in World War II were added to it.
