Gooseberry Hill is a suburb in Perth, Western Australia. It's part of the City of Kalamunda and is home to the beautiful Gooseberry Hill National Park.

About Gooseberry Hill

Gooseberry Hill is located on a high point of land. It offers great views over the area. It's also known for the old Kalamunda Zig Zag railway line. This railway used to wind its way up the hill.

History of the Area

The name "Gooseberry Hill" comes from the cape gooseberry plants that grew there. In 1878, a surveyor named Henry Samuel Ranford officially recorded the name. The townsite of Gooseberry Hill was officially made a suburb on June 8, 1959.

A Wartime Event

During World War II, a sad event happened in Gooseberry Hill. On April 19, 1945, a United States Navy C-47 Skytrain plane crashed in heavy fog. It had just taken off from Guildford Airport (now Perth Airport). Sadly, all 13 people on board, including US servicemen and Red Cross women, passed away. The plane crashed not far from its take-off point.

Gooseberry Hill has two schools for local children. Gooseberry Hill Primary School is a government school that opened in 1972. Mary's Mount Primary School is a Catholic school that has been around even longer, established in 1921.
