Gordon Moakes: A Musician's Journey
Gordon Moakes became a member of Bloc Party after seeing an advertisement. The band's other members, Kele Okereke and Russell Lissack, had placed it in the NME music magazine. They were looking for a bass player. Even though Gordon wasn't a bassist originally, he was the only person who could play the bassline for a song they showed him.
In 2002, Gordon, Russell, and Kele formed the first version of Bloc Party. Back then, they were called The Angel Range. They played many shows across London. Gordon also managed and updated the band's website during that time.
His Role in Bloc Party's Music
Gordon helped write some of the band's early song lyrics with Kele Okereke. In the beginning, he often wrote lyrics for the band's songs that had a political message. He also wrote the song "Diet" by himself.
Gordon learned to play new instruments for Bloc Party's second and third albums. These albums were A Weekend in the City and Intimacy. He played drums on the song "Sunday" and electronic drums on "Ares." He also played the glockenspiel on "Waiting for the 7.18" and "SRXT." For the song "Flux," he used a microKORG synthesizer. You can hear his voice in many of the band's songs. His voice often sounds different from Kele Okereke's main vocals.
Gordon also created a remix of the band's song "Talons." This song was from their album Intimacy. His remix was available when people downloaded the single. It also appeared on the vinyl record version.
Moving On from Bloc Party
In 2015, Gordon confirmed that he had left Bloc Party. He wanted to focus on his other band, Young Legionnaire. Another musician, Justin Harris, replaced him later that year. Gordon lived in Austin, Texas, for several years. Now, he lives in London, England, with his wife and children.
Other Musical Projects
Gordon Moakes has worked on music outside of Bloc Party too.
Young Legionnaire
In December 2009, Gordon started a new project. He worked with Paul Mullen (singer and guitarist from The Automatic) and William Bowerman (drummer from La Roux). They worked together in the studio while Bloc Party was taking a break. In January 2010, they announced their new band was called Young Legionnaire. They played their first show in London at the end of January.
The None
In February 2024, Gordon performed several concerts with his newest band, The None. He started this band because he wanted to create something new. This happened after he moved back to London from Austin, Texas.
