Exploring Grant Township
Grant Township is home to a few small communities. These places have interesting histories, especially how they got their names!
Blaine: A Community's History
Blaine is a small community located near the center of Grant Township. Its story began in 1828 when Thomas S. Knapp from Detroit bought land here. He built a sawmill, which was important for the area.
When Grant Township was officially created in 1866, it was named after Ulysses S. Grant. He was a famous general who later became a U.S. President. The settlement was first called Grant Center. However, there was another post office in Michigan with the same name. So, the community asked for a new name: Blaine. This name honored James G. Blaine, a well-known Republican U.S. Senator. The Blaine post office served the area from November 1879 until December 1960.
Jeddo: From Potter's Corners to Today
Jeddo is another community found in the northern part of Grant Township. It was first known as "Potter's Corners." This name came from an early settler named A.S. Potter. In February 1859, a post office opened here and was called "Pottersburg."
The name changed to Jeddo in July 1864. Today, the Jeddo ZIP code is used for all of Grant Township. It also covers parts of nearby Fremont and Worth townships in Sanilac County. A small area in Burtchville Township also uses this ZIP code.
Geography of the Township
