Granum's Past: A Look at Its History
The community of Granum started as the Village of Leavings on July 12, 1904. It was named "The Leavings" because it was a stopping point for old "Bull-team Freighters." These freighters used to stop at Willow Creek, west of Pultney siding, to get water and unload their goods. It was a place where a trail left a river, reminding travelers to bring water with them.
Leavings changed its name to Granum on March 31, 1908. Then, on November 7, 1910, it officially became a town. In the 2016 census, Granum had 406 people, making it Alberta's smallest town at that time. On February 1, 2020, Granum changed from being a town back to a hamlet. It is now managed by the Municipal District of Willow Creek No. 26.
