The Story of Granville

Granville was officially planned out in 1882. The city was named after Richard Grenville, a famous English explorer. A post office opened in Granville in 1884 and has been serving the community ever since.

Education in Granville

The local schools in Granville are part of the MOC-Floyd Valley Community School District. This school district was created in 1994 when two smaller districts, Maurice-Orange City and Floyd Valley, joined together.

Granville was once home to Spalding Catholic High School. This high school was very famous for its successful baseball team, the Spartans. They won state championships many times, including in 1971, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1989, 2000, and 2001! Their big rival was Remsen St. Mary's, located nearby.

Spalding Catholic High School later merged with Gehlen Catholic High School in 2013. The Spalding Catholic School, which teaches younger students, is now located in Alton. The old middle school building in Granville closed in 2017. Now, middle school students attend Gehlen Catholic School in LeMars. The former Granville school building is now used as the St. Joseph's Parish Center.
