A Look Back at Granville's History

Many of Granville's first settlers came from the New England area. At that time, both Vermont and New York claimed the land.

The first known settler was a merchant named Bishop. He opened the first store in Granville in 1780. Around 1850, people discovered slate deposits in the area. The business of mining and working with slate then grew and spread to Granville village by 1871.

The United States Post Office building in Granville is quite old. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. This means it's an important historical building.

Where is Granville?

Granville is a small village, covering about 1.6 square miles (4.1 square kilometers) of land. There is no water area within the village limits.

The village is located right on the border with the state of Vermont.

Two rivers meet in Granville: The Indian River and the Mettowee River. The Mettowee River is also known as the Pawlet River. NY Route 22 runs along the west side of the village. It connects with NY Route 149 south of the village. NY-149 goes through the village as Main Street. When it crosses into Vermont, it becomes Vermont Route 149. County Road 24 also leads into Granville from the northwest.

Granville's Welsh Roots

Granville has a special connection to Wales, a country in the United Kingdom. This connection started in the 1860s. Welsh miners from places like Blaenau Ffestiniog and Bethesda came to the area. Many of them left their families behind at first, planning to send for them later.

Over time, more and more Welsh immigrants settled in Granville. The village slowly became a well-known Welsh American community. This community was largest around 1910. At that time, out of 3,920 people in the town, 949 were born in Wales. Another 847 people were born in America to Welsh parents. This means that nearly half (45.8%) of the town's population had Welsh roots.

You can still find Welsh names for places and chapels (small churches) in Granville today. Examples include "Brynhyfryd" and Peniel Chapel. There's even a Welsh folk song called "Molianwn" that started in Granville. This song talks about the slate quarries closing down during the cold winter months.
