What is Grasmere?
Grasmere is located in the southwestern part of Idaho. It sits right on Idaho State Highway 51. This makes it easy to find, even though it's quite remote. It's about 32.5 miles (52.3 km) north of the Nevada border. It is also 58.5 miles (94.1 km) south of Mountain Home.
A Look Back: Grasmere's Past
In the past, Grasmere was a small but important service stop. Imagine a place where people traveling through the area could fill up their cars with gas. They could also grab a bite to eat at a bar and grill. There was even a post office where people could send and receive mail. It was a vital spot for anyone driving through this part of Idaho.
Grasmere Today: An Air Force Station
Today, Grasmere is no longer a typical service stop. Instead, it's home to a special United States Air Force station. This station is staffed by airmen from nearby Mountain Home Air Force Base. Airmen from the Idaho Air National Guard at Gowen Field in Boise also work here.
The main job of this station is to operate a flight training range. This range is located over the Bruneau Canyon of the Bruneau River, just east of Grasmere. Air Force planes from Mountain Home and other bases, like Hill Air Force Base and Fairchild Air Force Base, use this area for training. It's a key spot for pilots to practice their skills.
The Airfield at Grasmere
Grasmere also has an unattended airport for general aviation. This means it's a small airport that private planes can use. It has been in service since April 1956. The Idaho Transportation Department owns and manages this airfield.
Location and Geography
Grasmere is located at an elevation of 5,089 feet (1,551 meters) above sea level. This high elevation means it's quite a bit above the ocean's surface. The area around Grasmere is part of the vast and beautiful landscape of Owyhee County.
