Graveyard of the Pacific
The Graveyard of the Pacific is a dangerous stretch of coastline known for many shipwrecks.

The Graveyard of the Pacific is a dangerous part of the Pacific Northwest coast. It stretches from Tillamook Bay in Oregon up past the tricky Columbia Bar and Juan de Fuca Strait. It continues along the rocky west side of Vancouver Island all the way to Cape Scott.

This area has seen thousands of ships wreck since European explorers first arrived in the 1700s. Unpredictable weather, like sudden storms and thick fog, makes it very risky. The coast itself is also dangerous with shifting sandbars, strong tidal currents, and sharp, rocky reefs.

Why So Many Shipwrecks?

This part of the ocean is very challenging for ships. Many things make it a dangerous place to sail:

  • Bad Weather: Sudden storms can hit without warning. Thick fog can make it impossible to see.
  • Shifting Sandbars: Places like the Columbia Bar are huge sandbanks at the mouth of a river. They move around, making it hard for ships to know where the safe path is.
  • Strong Currents: Tidal rips are powerful currents caused by tides. They can pull ships off course or push them onto rocks.
  • Rocky Coastlines: The shores are often lined with sharp rocks and reefs. If a ship hits these, it can be badly damaged or sink quickly.

How Many Ships Have Wrecked?

More than 2,000 ships have wrecked in this area. Near the Columbia Bar alone, over 700 lives have been lost. One book even lists 484 wrecks just off the south and west sides of Vancouver Island.

While major shipwrecks have become less common since the 1920s, some lives are still lost each year. This shows that the area remains a challenge for sailors.

Most Dangerous Spots

Some places in the Graveyard of the Pacific are especially risky:

What Happens to Wrecked Ships?

When ships wreck in this area, it's often hard to save them or their cargo. Attempts to salvage (rescue) parts of the ship are usually not very successful. This is because many wrecks are very old. Also, the weather and sea conditions are so unpredictable. Ships often suffer a lot of damage when they first hit. This means there's usually not much left to recover.

Where Did the Name Come From?

People believe the name "Graveyard of the Pacific" started a long time ago. It was during the early days of the maritime fur trade. This was when ships sailed to trade for animal furs.

The name not only described the danger of shipwrecks. It also reflected the competition and sometimes conflicts in the area. Different countries like Russia, Spain, and Great Britain were all trying to control the trade and land. Native tribal peoples also lived and traded in the area. This mix of dangerous waters and historical rivalries gave the region its famous name.
