Gray Peak is a tall mountain located in the Adirondack Park in New York, United States. It is the seventh-highest mountain in the special area known as the Adirondack High Peaks. Gray Peak is very close to Mount Marcy, which is the highest mountain in all of New York state. You can find Gray Peak southwest of Mount Marcy and southeast of Mount Colden.

About Gray Peak

Gray Peak was named after a famous botanist named Asa Gray. A botanist is a scientist who studies plants. The mountain was given its name by Verplanck Colvin, who was a surveyor. Surveyors are people who measure and map out land.

Climbing Gray Peak

Most people who climb Gray Peak start their journey from a small lake called Lake Tear of the Clouds. There are also other ways to approach the mountain, like from Elk Lake or Upper Works.

Gray Peak is special because it is the highest mountain in the Adirondacks that does not have a marked trail. This means there are no signs or clear paths to guide hikers to the top. Because of this, and because the view from the very top isn't as wide as from some other mountains, fewer people climb Gray Peak compared to other mountains that are not as tall.
