Great Asby is a small village found in Cumbria, England. It's a peaceful place, mostly used by people who work in farming.

This village used to be part of an area called Westmorland. It's located about 15 miles (24 km) southeast of Penrith. You can also find it about 5 miles (8 km) south of Appleby-in-Westmorland.

The name "Asby" has an interesting history. It comes from old words. Askr means "ash tree," and by means "farm." So, Great Asby might mean "big ash tree farm."

The village has a church called St Peter's Church. This church was built a long time ago, between the years 1863 and 1866.

Exploring Great Asby's Landscape

Great Asby is surrounded by interesting natural features. The land here is quite unique.

Asby Gill: A Sometimes Dry Stream

A small stream called Asby Gill runs right through the middle of Great Asby. A "gill" is another word for a narrow valley or a small stream.

However, this stream isn't always flowing with water. It often dries up. You will usually only see water in Asby Gill after there has been a lot of heavy rain.

Great Asby Scar: A Special Nature Spot

About 2.5 miles (4 km) southwest of the village, you'll find a very special place called Great Asby Scar. This area has been named a national nature reserve.

It's protected because of its unique limestone rocks. These rocks create special areas called limestone pavements. These pavements are like natural rocky paths. Many interesting plants grow in these areas, making it a great place to explore nature.
