Great Braxted is a small village in Essex, England. It is located between the villages of Great Totham and Tiptree. In 2011, about 130 people lived there. The village is home to a large country house called Braxted Park. This estate also includes the old All Saints' church, which dates back to medieval times.
A Look Back at Great Braxted
The name 'Braxted' has a long history. It was first written down in the Domesday Book of 1086. This was a huge survey of England ordered by William the Conqueror. In the Domesday Book, the village was called Brachesteda.
The name comes from an old English word, 'braec'. This word means 'newly cultivated land'. So, 'Braxted' likely meant a place where new farms were started. The village was first called 'Great Braxted' in 1206. Another nearby village, Little Braxted, was first mentioned in 1254.
