Tiptree is a village and civil parish in Essex, England. It's about 10 kilometers (6 miles) south-west of Colchester and 50 kilometers (31 miles) north-east of London. Many other villages are nearby, like Messing and Layer Marney.

The name 'Tiptree' first appeared around 1225. It means "Tippa's tree," likely named after a person called Tippa.

In 2011, about 9,152 people lived in Tiptree. The village has been growing fast with many new houses. Even so, it's still called a village. In 1999, people voted on whether Tiptree should become a town, but they chose to keep it as a village. Tiptree is now one of the biggest villages in England.

Tiptree has four primary schools: St Luke's, Milldene, Tiptree Heath, and Baynard's. Thurstable School offers education for older students. You can also find the historic Messing Maypole Mill here. The famous Wilkin & Sons company, which makes jams and preserves, is also in Tiptree. Their products are known worldwide.

Tiptree is part of the City of Colchester. It is managed by the Tiptree Parish Council, Colchester City Council, and Essex County Council. It's also part of the Witham area for the UK Parliament.

Tiptree was the place of a funny event called the "Tiptree sneeze" in 2014. A trombonist sneezed into his trombone during a concert at St. Luke's Parish Church. A video of this moment became very popular online.

Tiptree Heath: A Special Place

Tiptree Heath is south of the village. This 25-hectare (62-acre) heath is the largest piece of heathland left in Essex. It's so important that it's a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Long ago, smugglers used to hide their illegal goods in the thick bushes of the heath.

You can find different types of heather plants here, like Cross-leaved Heather and Bell Heather. To keep the heath healthy, Dexter cattle graze there in summer. A group of tough Exmoor ponies also helps by eating plants all year round. Tiptree Parish Field is another special natural area called a Local Nature Reserve.

How Tiptree is Governed

Tiptree has its own local government area called an electoral ward. In 2011, about 7,583 people lived in this ward. This helps manage local services for the community.
