Where Great Pond Gets Its Water
Great Pond gets water from several places. Salmon Lake flows into its east side. This happens through a short channel near the village of North Belgrade. Great Meadow Stream brings water from North Pond and East Pond into the north side. Other smaller streams also feed into Great Pond. These include Robbins Mill Stream, Rome Trout Brook, and Austin Bog.
Where Great Pond's Water Goes
The water from Great Pond flows out to the east. It goes through a structure called the Great Pond Storage Dam. Then, it flows into a short part of Belgrade Stream. From there, the water enters Long Pond. This happens near the village of Belgrade Lakes.
Towns and Islands
The town of Rome is located at the north end of Great Pond. Most of Great Pond itself is found in the town of Belgrade. Great Pond has several islands. These include Hoyt Island, Chute Island, Joyce Island, Oak Island, and Pine Island.
The Mountain and the Dam
North of the village of Belgrade Lakes, Long Pond is separated from Great Pond. A mountain simply called "The Mountain" stands between them. Great Pond got its current shape when the Great Pond Storage Dam was built. This dam was constructed on Belgrade Stream in 1886. It was built to help generate power. The dam is 14 feet (4.3 meters) high.
