The Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC) is a hospital in the Baltimore area of Towson, Maryland. It first opened its doors in 1965. GBMC helps many people each year, with over 20,000 patients staying overnight and about 52,000 visits to its emergency department.

GBMC's main campus has three buildings for doctors' offices. These are called Physicians Pavilion East, Physicians Pavilion West, and Physicians Pavilion North I. Besides its main location in Towson, GBMC also has other health centers in nearby communities. These include places like Hereford, Hunt Manor, Hunt Valley, Owings Mills, Perry Hall, Lutherville, Phoenix, and Timonium.

GBMC HealthCare is a private group that does not aim to make a profit. It owns and runs the Greater Baltimore Medical Center. This group also runs Gilchrist Hospice Care. Gilchrist Hospice Care is the biggest non-profit hospice organization in Maryland. A hospice helps people who are very sick feel comfortable. The GBMC Foundation is also part of this group. It helps raise money for GBMC. In 2023, GBMC was named one of the top 10 hospitals in Baltimore. It was also one of the 40 best places to work in Maryland.

GBMC works closely with Sheppard Pratt. Sheppard Pratt is a hospital that helps people with mental health needs. Both hospitals are located next to each other on the Towson campus.

History of GBMC

GBMC HealthCare was officially started in 1960. It brought together two special hospitals from Baltimore: the Hospital for Women of Maryland and the Presbyterian Eye, Ear and Throat Charity Hospital. GBMC opened in 1965 as a medical center for the region. It offered general and special health services to people in northern Baltimore City and parts of other nearby counties.

The Hospital for Women of Maryland in Baltimore City opened in 1882. It was one of the first hospitals in the country just for women. The Presbyterian Eye, Ear and Throat Charity Hospital started as a small clinic in 1887. It was in a Civil War surgeon's carriage house.

Since moving to Towson from Baltimore City, GBMC has been located next to Towson University.

In 2020, GBMC received the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. This award is given for excellent quality. It also got a 5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. This rating shows how well hospitals care for patients.

Starting in 2021, GBMC began a big project to update and improve its buildings. This project added 60 new patient beds. It also included a new center for cancer care.

Gilchrist Hospice Care

Gilchrist Hospice Care is a special program that helps people who are very sick. It is the largest non-profit hospice group in Maryland. Since 1994, it has helped over 17,000 people. These people live in Baltimore City and nearby counties.

Gilchrist Hospice Care offers many services. These include medical care, nursing, social work, and help at home. They also offer spiritual support and help for families who are grieving. Volunteers also provide assistance. Most of the time, hospice services are given in the patient's home. If a patient needs more medical care, there are special inpatient hospice centers. These centers are in three locations:

  • Towson - located at the GBMC campus
  • Columbia - a 10-bed unit in Howard County
  • Baltimore - units for adults and children at the site of the old Memorial Stadium

GBMC Foundation

The GBMC Foundation was started in 1987. It is a non-profit group that helps raise money for GBMC HealthCare. The Foundation holds events and asks for donations from patients. It also gets money from companies and other foundations.

The money raised by the GBMC Foundation helps in many ways. It supports new buildings and buys equipment for doctors and staff. It also helps special programs and new technologies. All of this helps GBMC be a great hospital for people in Central Maryland.

Working with Johns Hopkins Medicine

In 2007, GBMC and Johns Hopkins Medicine started working together. They began with programs for cardiology (heart care), pediatric surgery (surgery for children), and oncology (cancer care). They hope to work together on more medical practices and research in the future.

2020 Computer Attack

In late 2020, GBMC was hit by a computer attack. This attack made many of the health system's computer systems stop working. The systems were taken offline to keep patient information safe. This type of attack has happened to many other hospitals in the United States.
