Discovering Greenville's Past
The first post office in Greenville opened in 1871. The town was named after its first postmaster, a person named A. W. Green.
The 1901 Bank Robbery Mystery
On November 16, 1901, a big event happened in Greenville. Someone broke into the local bank. They used explosives to blow open the vault door and stole money.
Later, three men were seen in nearby towns like Spencer and Webb. They were finally cornered at a train station in Albert City. A gunfight happened there. One of the robbers was killed. The other two were caught and sent to prison for life in Fort Madison. The robber who died was buried in an unmarked grave. People found 64 empty bullet casings at the train station after the shootout.
