Greg Lomack Allen, born on March 15, 1993, is an American professional baseball player. He plays as an outfielder for the Chicago Cubs organization. He has also played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for several teams. These teams include the Cleveland Indians, San Diego Padres, New York Yankees, and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Greg Allen's Early Baseball Days

High School and College Career

Greg Allen went to Hilltop High School in Chula Vista, California. After high school, he attended San Diego State University. There, he played college baseball for three seasons. He was part of the San Diego State Aztecs team. In 2013, he also played summer baseball. This was with the Orleans Firebirds in the Cape Cod Baseball League.

Greg Allen's Professional Baseball Journey

Starting with the Cleveland Indians

The Cleveland Indians picked Greg Allen in the sixth round of the 2014 MLB draft. After signing, he joined the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. He spent his entire 2014 season there. He had a batting average of .244. He also had 19 runs batted in (RBIs) and 30 stolen bases in 57 games played.

In 2015, Allen played for the Lake County Captains. He hit seven home runs and had 45 RBIs. He also stole 43 bases in 123 games. He played a few games for the Lynchburg Hillcats at the end of that season.

Moving Up in the Indians System

In 2016, Allen played for Lynchburg before moving up to the Akron RubberDucks. Between both teams, he batted .295. He also hit seven home runs and had 44 RBIs. He stole 45 bases that year. After the season, he played in the Arizona Fall League.

The Indians called him up to the major leagues on September 1, 2017. Before this, he was batting .264 with Akron. He had two home runs, 24 RBIs, and 21 stolen bases. On September 7, Allen hit his first MLB home run.

Allen started the 2018 season with the Columbus Clippers. On May 27, he hit his first major league walk-off home run. This happened against the Astros in the 14th inning. On September 23, 2018, Allen hit another game-winning base hit. This was against the Boston Red Sox in the 11th inning. Allen finished the 2018 season with a .257 batting average and 21 stolen bases.

Playing for the San Diego Padres

On August 31, 2020, the Indians traded Allen to the San Diego Padres. He played in one game for San Diego. Then, he was sent to their alternate training site. On December 31, 2020, the Padres removed Allen from their roster.

Time with the New York Yankees

On January 6, 2021, the Padres traded Allen to the New York Yankees. On February 23, 2021, the Yankees removed Allen from their roster again. He was later invited to spring training. He started the season with the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.

When the Yankees had a health issue with some players, they called Allen up on July 16. Allen played in 15 games for the Yankees. He hit .270 with two RBIs. On August 5, Allen returned to Triple-A Scranton. The Yankees also added Allen to their roster for the 2021 American League Wild Card Game.

Joining the Pittsburgh Pirates

On November 5, 2021, the Pittsburgh Pirates claimed Allen. This means they picked him up from waivers. In April 2022, Allen hurt his hamstring during spring training. He was placed on the injured list for a long time. He was able to play again on July 22. On September 26, Allen was removed from the Pirates' roster. He later became a free agent on October 6.

A Short Stint with the Boston Red Sox

On January 11, 2023, Allen signed a minor-league contract with the Boston Red Sox. He played for the Triple–A Worcester Red Sox. In 37 games, he batted .250. He also hit 2 home runs, had 15 RBI, and stole 23 bases.

Returning to the New York Yankees (Twice!)

On May 19, 2023, Allen was traded back to the Yankees. This was his second time playing for New York. He joined the Yankees' main roster the next day. On June 9, it was announced that Allen would be out for several weeks. This was due to a hip injury. He was activated from the injured list on July 23. In 22 games for the Yankees, he hit .217. He had 1 home run, 1 RBI, and 3 stolen bases. On August 22, Allen was removed from the Yankees' roster again. Two days later, he became a free agent.

On January 30, 2024, Allen signed another minor league contract with the Yankees. This was his third time with the team. He played in 61 games for the Double-A Somerset Patriots and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. He hit three home runs, had 22 RBI, and stole 13 bases. Allen became a free agent again on November 4.

Playing for the Chicago Cubs

On February 21, 2025, Allen signed a minor league contract with the Chicago Cubs. He played in 32 games for the Triple-A Iowa Cubs. He batted .312 with two home runs, 14 RBI, and five stolen bases. Allen was released by the Cubs on June 3. On June 10, Allen re-signed with Chicago on a new minor league contract.
