Gregorio Ricci-Curbastro (born January 12, 1853 – died August 6, 1925) was a brilliant Italian mathematician. He was born in Lugo di Romagna. He is most famous for inventing something called tensor calculus. This was a very important new way to do math.
He worked with his student, Tullio Levi-Civita, to write his most famous book. This book was a groundbreaking work about tensors. He signed it as 'Gregorio Ricci,' which was a shorter version of his name. This sometimes makes people a little confused!
Gregorio also wrote important books and papers on other math subjects. These included advanced algebra and the theory of real numbers. He built on the work of another mathematician named Richard Dedekind.

Biography
Early Life and Education
Gregorio Ricci-Curbastro finished high school when he was only sixteen years old. In 1869, he started studying philosophy and mathematics at Rome University.
The next year, the Papal State changed, and his father called him back home to Lugo. He then studied for a year in Bologna. After that, he enrolled at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa.
In 1875, he graduated from Pisa with a degree in Physical Sciences and Mathematics. His final paper was about differential equations. During his studies, he learned from famous mathematicians like Enrico Betti, Eugenio Beltrami, Ulisse Dini, and Felix Klein.
Developing Absolute Differential Calculus
In 1877, Ricci-Curbastro received a scholarship to study in Munich, Germany. Later, he worked as an assistant to his former teacher, Ulisse Dini.
In 1880, he became a math lecturer at the University of Padua. There, he focused on Riemannian geometry and quadratic forms.
He put together a research team, and Tullio Levi-Civita was part of it. Together, they wrote a very important book about absolute differential calculus. This is also known as Ricci calculus or tensor calculus. This new math became the main language for Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity.
In fact, absolute differential calculus was key to developing Einstein's theory. Einstein himself mentioned this in a letter to Ricci-Curbastro's nephew. In his work, Ricci-Curbastro identified something called the Ricci tensor, which was very important for Einstein's theory.
Who Influenced His Work?
The idea of using tensor calculus in how things move (dynamics) goes back to Joseph-Louis Lagrange. He created a general way to understand how a dynamical system works. Bernhard Riemann was also important because he was the first to think about geometry in many different dimensions.
Ricci-Curbastro was also influenced by the work of Elwin Bruno Christoffel and Rudolf Lipschitz. They worked on quadratic forms. It was Christoffel's idea of covariant differentiation that helped Ricci-Curbastro make his biggest breakthroughs.
Achievements and Recognition
Ricci-Curbastro received many honors for his important contributions to mathematics.
He was recognized by several important academies, including:
- The Veneto Institute of Science (from 1892), where he was president from 1916 to 1919.
- The Lincei Academy (Accademia dei Lincei) (from 1899).
- The Academy of Padua (from 1905).
- The Science Academy of Turin (from 1918).
- The Galileian Academy of Science (from 1920), where he was president from 1920 to 1922.
- The Academy of Sciences of the Institute of Bologna (from 1922).
- The Pontifical Academy of Sciences (from 1925).
He was also active in politics in his hometown and in Padua. He helped with projects like draining land in the Ravenna area and building the Lugo aqueduct.
An asteroid named 13642 Ricci was named after him to honor his work.
