Ulisse Dini was an important Italian mathematician and politician. He was born in Pisa on November 14, 1845, and passed away on October 28, 1918. Dini is famous for his work in a field of math called real analysis. He even wrote a book about it called "Foundations for the Theory of Functions of Real Variables."

Life and Education

Betti Enrico
Enrico Betti was Ulisse Dini's teacher and mentor.

Ulisse Dini went to the Scuola Normale Superiore to become a teacher. One of his professors there was Enrico Betti, who became his mentor.

In 1865, Dini received a special scholarship. This allowed him to travel to Paris, France. There, he studied with famous mathematicians like Charles Hermite and Joseph Bertrand. During this time, he also published several of his own math papers.

Becoming a Professor

In 1866, Dini started teaching at the University of Pisa. He taught subjects like algebra and geodesy (which is about measuring the Earth's shape).

Later, in 1871, he took over from his former teacher, Enrico Betti. Dini became a professor of analysis and geometry.

Leading Universities

Dini was also a leader at the university. From 1888 to 1890, he was the rettore (like a president) of the University of Pisa. He also led the Scuola Normale Superiore from 1908 until he passed away in 1918.

Dini as a Politician

Besides his math work, Ulisse Dini was also active in politics. In 1871, he was elected to the Pisa city council. Later, in 1880, he became a member of the Italian parliament. This shows he was involved in both science and public service.

Special Recognition

Because of his important work, Ulisse Dini was made an honorary member of the London Mathematical Society. This is a special honor given to top mathematicians.

Ulisse Dini worked on mathematical analysis during a time when mathematicians were trying to make it more exact and logical. He wrote about 60 papers and several books.

One of his most famous books, "Foundations for the Theory of Functions of Real Variables", was published in 1878. This book was very important for understanding how numbers and functions work.

Key Discoveries

Dini proved something called the Dini criterion. This helps mathematicians understand when a special type of math series, called a Fourier series, will work correctly.

He also studied potential theory and differential geometry. These are areas of math that deal with shapes and forces. His work built on ideas from another mathematician named Eugenio Beltrami.

Dini's ideas about real functions also helped develop the idea of "measure on a set". This is a way to assign a "size" to different groups of numbers.

Dini's Theorem

There's a math rule known as the implicit function theorem. In Italy, this rule is often called Dini's theorem.

Teaching Future Mathematicians

Ulisse Dini also taught many students. One of his notable students was Luigi Bianchi, who also became a famous mathematician.
