Gregory Phillip Kane (born around 1951 – died February 18, 2014) was an American journalist. He was also a commentator, meaning he shared his opinions on political and social topics.
Early Life and Education
Gregory Kane was born in the city of Baltimore, Maryland. He grew up in the western part of Baltimore. He went to public schools in Baltimore City. In 1969, he graduated from Baltimore City College high school.
A Career in Journalism
Gregory Kane started his journey in journalism in 1984. He began as a writer who worked for different publications, called a freelance writer. One of his first jobs was writing for The Baltimore Sun newspaper.
From 1993 to 2008, he worked as a full-time writer for The Baltimore Sun. In 2008, he joined The Baltimore Examiner as a columnist. A columnist writes regular articles that share their views on different subjects.
After The Baltimore Examiner closed in 2009, Gregory Kane continued writing. He moved to its sister newspaper, The Washington Examiner. He wrote for this newspaper until he passed away. He also taught writing as a visiting professor at Johns Hopkins University. Gregory Kane died on February 18, 2014, after battling cancer.
Recognized for His Work
Gregory Kane received many honors for his writing. In 1997, he was nominated for a very important award called the Pulitzer Prize. This nomination was for his work on a three-part series about slavery in Sudan. He was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in Explanatory Journalism.
He shared this nomination with another reporter from The Baltimore Sun, Gilbert Lewthwaite. Both men also won the Overseas Press Club award. This award was for their excellent reporting on human rights. They also received an award from the National Association of Black Journalists for the same series of articles.
Gregory Kane also won several other awards during his career. These awards came from Baltimore magazine. He also received honors from the Press Club of Atlantic City. The Maryland chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists also gave him awards.
