Growing Up

Grey Brydges was the only son of William Brydges, 4th Baron Chandos. His mother was Mary Hopton. His father passed away on November 18, 1602. Before that, Grey Brydges served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Cricklade in 1597.

The Brydges family was friends with Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex. Essex was a powerful nobleman. In 1601, Essex tried to start a rebellion. Grey Brydges was thought to be involved in this plan. He was briefly held in the Fleet Prison but was soon set free.

Life at Court

In 1602, Grey Brydges became the 5th Baron Chandos after his father's death. He attended King James I of England's first parliament in 1604. He was also made a Knight of the Bath in 1605. This was a special honor given when Prince Charles Stewart became the Duke of York.

Grey Brydges visited Oxford with King James I. He received a special Master of Arts degree there in 1605. He was also put in charge of Ditton Park in Buckinghamshire for his whole life. He attended the funeral of Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales, in 1612. Grey Brydges also enjoyed taking part in court plays called masques and in knightly tournaments.

He became the Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire. This was a very important position. People called him the "King of the Cotswolds". This was because he was very generous and lived a magnificent life at his home, Sudeley Castle.

Adventures Abroad

In 1608, Grey Brydges went on a trip with Degory Wheare. In 1610, he joined an army expedition to the Low Countries (modern-day Belgium and Netherlands). This was during a conflict called the War of the Jülich succession. The English army worked with Holland and France to protect a town called Juliers. Sir Edward Herbert was his companion during this time. Grey Brydges stayed in Juliers but did not take a big part in the fighting. After this, he went to Paris to study at a famous academy. He then traveled to Blois in France.

In 1612, Grey Brydges visited Spa in the Low Countries for his health. He had been there before during the war.

Later Years and Passing

Grey Brydges' health began to fail. He tried different waters to help him feel better. In 1618, he tried the waters at Newenham Mills. But his health did not improve. He returned to Spa, Belgium, where he passed away suddenly on August 10, 1621. He was only 41 years old. His body was brought back to Sudeley Castle and buried there.

Family Life

On February 28, 1607, Grey Brydges married Lady Anne Stanley. She was the daughter of Ferdinando Stanley, 5th Earl of Derby. Lady Anne was a great-great-granddaughter of King Henry VIII's sister, Princess Mary Tudor. This meant she was once considered a possible heir to the English throne. However, King James VI of Scotland became king instead.

Grey and Anne had five children together:

  • Robert Brydges (born 1611): He passed away when he was very young.
  • Anne Brydges (born 1612): She got married, but not much is known about her later life.
  • Elizabeth Brydges (1619–1678): She married her stepbrother, James Tuchet, 3rd Earl of Castlehaven.
  • George Brydges, 6th Baron Chandos (1620–1654): He became the next Baron Chandos. He had six daughters but no sons.
  • William Brydges, 7th Baron Chandos (1621–1676): He also became Baron Chandos but had no children.
