The Greybull River is a river in northern Wyoming, United States. It flows for about 90 miles (140 km) before joining the Big Horn River. This river is important for local wildlife and has an interesting history.

What's in a Name?

The Greybull River got its name from a special animal. People say it was named after a white buffalo that was seen near its banks. For many Native Americans, seeing a white buffalo is a very powerful and important sign.

Where the River Flows

The Greybull River starts high up in the Absaroka Mountains. These mountains are in the southwest part of the Big Horn Basin in Wyoming. The river begins near a place called Francs Peak.

As it flows, the Greybull River meets another river called the Wood River. They flow together out of the mountains near the town of Meeteetse. The river then travels through parts of Park County and Big Horn County. Finally, it flows into the Big Horn River near the town of Greybull.

Amazing River Life

The upper parts of the Greybull River are known as a fantastic place for trout fishing. It is home to some of the best groups of Yellowstone cutthroat trout. These fish are very special because they are genetically pure, meaning their genes haven't mixed with other types of trout.

In 1981, something amazing happened near Meeteetse. A group of black-footed ferrets was found on the Pitchfork Ranch. Before this discovery, many people thought these animals were extinct, meaning they had all died out. Finding them here was a huge surprise and a big deal for wildlife conservation!
