Gustavo Bacarisa (1872–1971) was a famous painter from Gibraltar. He was known for his colorful and detailed paintings. His art often showed real-life scenes and people. He was married to Elsa Jernås, who was also an artist and designer from Sweden.

Gustavo Bacarisa's Art Journey
Gustavo Bacarisa studied art in Paris, France. After his studies, he worked in Buenos Aires, Argentina, until 1916. Later, he moved to Seville, a city in the Andalusia region of Spain.
Working on Operas
Bacarisas also traveled to Sweden to help create the stage designs for an opera called Carmen. He did similar work for the first show of El amor brujo (which means Love, the Magician) in Madrid, Spain. This shows he was not just a painter but also a talented designer for theater.
Moving During Wars
During the Spanish Civil War, Gustavo Bacarisa moved to Madeira, an island belonging to Portugal. He returned to Gibraltar in 1937. After World War II ended, he moved back to Spain and settled down in Seville.
Recognized for His Art
Gustavo Bacarisa showed his paintings in many cities in Spain and other countries. He received important awards for his work. He was given a gold medal and made an honorary professor by the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Santa Isabel de Hungría. He also became a member of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. These are special art academies that recognize great artists.
