Guy Arnold (born May 6, 1932 – died January 4, 2020) was a British writer and explorer. He loved to travel and wrote many books about different countries. He was especially interested in Africa and how countries around the world relate to each other.

Early Life and Education

Guy Arnold was born in Birkenhead, England. He was one of five children in his family. He grew up in Croydon and went to a boarding school called Kingham Hill School. Later, he studied History at St Peter's College, Oxford University. He finished his studies in 1955.

Adventures and First Books

After university, Guy Arnold went on an exciting trip. In 1955, he explored the Usun Apau Plateau and the Plieran River in Sarawak, Borneo. He was with three other friends from Oxford.

This adventure inspired him to write his first travel book, Longhouse and Jungle. He also wrote articles about his travels for magazines. These articles covered topics like the economy and music in Sarawak.

Helping Others Around the World

In 1958, Guy Arnold moved to Canada. He taught at two colleges there for five years. During this time, he helped create an important organization called the Canadian University Service Overseas (CUSO). This group helps send volunteers from Canada to work in other countries.

Many years later, in 1988, CUSO honored him for his 25 years of service. It was a special award to thank him for his big contribution.

Working in Africa

In 1964, Guy Arnold traveled to Northern Rhodesia, which is now Zambia. He worked as an adviser to Kenneth Kaunda, who was a very important leader there. Kaunda later became the first President of Zambia.

After Zambia became independent in October 1964, Guy Arnold had another big adventure. He drove all the way from Lusaka, Zambia, to London, England. This journey was over 11,500 kilometers long! He did this trip in a new Land-Rover.

A Prolific Writer and Consultant

Throughout his life, Guy Arnold worked with many groups that focused on international development. He even helped create a National Youth Service in Zambia before it became independent. From 1968 to 1972, he was the Director of the Africa Bureau, which was a group that worked to support African countries.

Guy Arnold wrote more than 50 books! Many of them were about travel and international affairs. He also wrote educational books for children. For over 30 years, he taught courses on international affairs at places like the Workers’ Educational Association and the University of Surrey.

Views on International Relations

Guy Arnold had strong opinions about how countries should work together. He was not a fan of the very close relationship between Britain and the United States. In 2014, he said he thought Britain should focus more on building stronger ties with Europe and Russia instead.

Later Years

Guy Arnold passed away on January 4, 2020. He left behind a legacy of exploration, writing, and a deep understanding of global affairs.
