Guy Touvron (born February 15, 1950 – died March 9, 2024) was a famous French trumpet player and music teacher. He played classical music. Guy Touvron was a very skilled solo musician. He performed with many of Europe's best orchestras. He also introduced many new trumpet concertos to the world.

Touvron gave over 3,000 concerts during his life. He is featured on more than 70 music recordings. He won several awards, including three important international prizes. Guy Touvron also taught the trumpet. He often led special teaching sessions called master classes all over the world. People called him one of France's best teachers for trumpet playing. He even wrote a book about his own teacher, Maurice André, in 2003.

About Guy Touvron

Guy Touvron was born in Vichy, France, on February 15, 1950. His parents were not musicians. But his grandfather played the cornet, which is like a small trumpet. When Guy was ten, he started playing the cornet. After a few years, he became very good at both the cornet and the trumpet.

Early Music Training

In 1967, Touvron joined the Paris Conservatory of Music. This is a famous music school. There, he studied with a very talented trumpet player named Maurice André. Just one year later, the Conservatory gave Touvron a top prize for playing the cornet. The next year, he won another top prize for playing the trumpet.

His Career as a Musician

From 1969 to 1971, Touvron was the main trumpet player for the Orchestre National de Lyon. Then, from 1971 to 1974, he held the same job for the French Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1973, he started his own music group. It was called the Guy Touvron Brass Ensemble.

Teaching and Performances

In 1974, Touvron became a teacher at the Lyons Conservatory. Later, in 1990, he began teaching at the Conservatoire National de Région in Paris. He often taught master classes around the world. These included lessons at the Juilliard School in New York City. He also taught at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.

Touvron played music by many different composers. He often performed works by Baroque composers. These included famous names like Bach, Albinoni, and Torelli. He also played modern classical music. He was the first to perform over 20 new trumpet concertos. These were written by composers like Ivan Jevtić and Jacques Loussier.

Guy Touvron performed with many well-known orchestras. Some of these were I Solisti Veneti and the English Chamber Orchestra. He also played at famous music festivals. These included festivals in Lille, Prades, and Salzburg.

Achievements and Legacy

Guy Touvron made over 70 recordings. He performed in more than 3,000 concerts. He won several important awards. These included three international Grand Prix prizes. He won them in Munich, Geneva, and Prague. In the early 2000s, Touvron wrote a book about his teacher, Maurice André. The book was called Maurice André: A Trumpet for Fame. It came out in 2003.

An asteroid was even named after him! It is called 278197 Touvron. A French astronomer found it in 2007. The official naming was announced in 2015.

Guy Touvron passed away on March 9, 2024, at the age of 74.
