Haggerston was a special area in London that got to choose its own representative for the UK Parliament. This area was officially called the "Haggerston Division of Shoreditch." It was located in the Haggerston part of the Metropolitan Borough of Shoreditch.

People living in Haggerston voted for one person to be their Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is like a spokesperson for their area in the House of Commons, which is where laws are made. The winner was chosen using a system called "first past the post," meaning the person with the most votes won.

A Quick Look at Haggerston's History

The Haggerston area became a special voting district in 1885. This happened because of a law called the Redistribution of Seats Act 1885. This law changed how voting areas were set up across the country.

Haggerston continued to be a voting district until 1918. After that, it was no longer a separate area for elections.

When Haggerston was first created in 1885, it was a part of the larger parliamentary borough of Shoreditch. This whole area was in the East End of London. Back then, it was managed as part of Middlesex, which was a county.

The Haggerston voting area included several smaller parts. These were known as Acron, Haggerston, Kingsland, and Whitmore wards. Think of wards as smaller neighborhoods within a bigger area.

In 1889, some big changes happened in how London was governed. The Haggerston area, along with others, became part of the new County of London. This meant it was no longer part of Middlesex. Local government was handled by groups called "vestries" and "local boards."

More changes came in 1900. The local government in London became more organized. The area of St. Leonard, Shoreditch, became part of a bigger area called the Metropolitan Borough of Shoreditch.

Finally, in 1918, the way parliamentary seats were divided changed again. The entire Metropolitan Borough of Shoreditch became one single voting area. Because of this, the Haggerston division was no longer needed and was officially removed.
