Early Life and Travels
Haider Ackermann was born in Bogotá, Colombia, in 1971. When he was nine months old, a French family adopted him. His adoptive father was a mapmaker, which meant the family moved around a lot.
Haider spent his childhood in many different countries. He lived in Ethiopia, Chad, Algeria, and France. When he was twelve, his family moved to the Netherlands. These travels helped shape his view of the world and his future designs.
Starting a Career in Fashion
Haider Ackermann was inspired by the famous designer Yves Saint Laurent. In 1994, he moved to Belgium to study fashion design. He attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. He left the academy in 1997 before finishing his studies.
After leaving school, Haider gained experience in the fashion world. He worked as an intern for five months with designer John Galliano. He also assisted one of his former teachers, Wim Neels. Over the next few years, he worked for several fashion brands.
Haider Ackermann's Own Brand
In 2001, Haider Ackermann started his very own fashion label. He showed his first collection for women in March 2001 during Paris Fashion Week. His designs quickly caught attention.
In 2002, his collection impressed Ruffo, a company known for leather clothing. Ruffo hired him to design their spring-summer and autumn-winter collections for 2003. In 2005, he partnered with a Belgian company called BVBA 32. He then set up his design studio in Paris.
Haider Ackermann became a very respected designer. Some people even thought he might take over from other famous designers. In 2010, Karl Lagerfeld, a legendary designer, said Haider would be his ideal successor at Chanel. Some fashion experts even called him a "new Yves Saint-Laurent."
Haider's designs are special because they mix different cultures and styles. He often uses simple shapes but makes them unique with uneven cuts. He also uses different types of fabrics together. Many famous people have worn his clothes, including Tilda Swinton, Timothée Chalamet, Penélope Cruz, and Janet Jackson.
In 2010, Haider also created a special menswear collection. This was shown at the Pitti fashion event in Florence. In 2013, his label became an independent company. That same year, he launched his first full collection for men. In 2014, he worked with Mercedes-Benz on a campaign with actress Tilda Swinton.
Working with Berluti
In September 2016, Haider Ackermann became the creative director for Berluti. This is a luxury brand known for its leather goods and menswear. He showed his first collection for Berluti in January 2017. During his time there, he brought a softer, more flowing style to the collections. He designed everything from clothes to sports accessories and even helped with advertising. He also continued to run his own fashion lines at the same time. Haider and Berluti decided to part ways in March 2018 after three seasons.
Haider Ackermann has a close creative partnership with actor Timothée Chalamet. They first met in Paris in 2017. Haider styled Timothée for his first big red carpet event at the 2017 Berlin International Film Festival. They have remained good friends and often work together. In 2021, they designed a special hoodie. All the money from selling these hoodies went to Afghanistan Libre. This organization helps protect the rights of women in Afghanistan.
Leading Tom Ford and Canada Goose
In 2024, Haider Ackermann was named the creative director for two major brands. He now leads the design teams at Canada Goose and Tom Ford. Timothée Chalamet wore the very first design by Haider for Tom Ford. It was a sparkly black suit worn at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards.
