History of Hallam
Before 1736, the land where Hallam is now was part of the territory of the Iroquois people. This included all parts of Pennsylvania west of the Susquehanna River.
In October 1736, the owners of Pennsylvania bought these lands from the Five Nations of the Iroquois. This included the area of Hallam.
From 1736 to 1739, the area was managed by Hempfield Township. This township was located in Lancaster County, east of the Susquehanna River. In 1739, a special law was passed. This law allowed Lancaster County to create new townships west of the river.
One of these new townships was Hellam Township. It was named after Hallamshire, a place in England where Samuel Blunston, a local leader, was born. Hellam Township was very large. It included much of what is now York, Adams, and Cumberland counties.
When Hallam became an official borough in 1902, its name was spelled "Hallam." This is the same spelling as the English town it was named after. The Martin Schultz House, an important old building, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.
