Halliwell's History

St Peter's church, Halliwell
St Peter's, Halliwell parish church, built in 1838

Halliwell was once a separate area in Lancashire, a historic county of England. It was its own small community within the ancient parish of Deane. You can still see hints of this old history today. For example, Boundary Street marks where Halliwell ended and the parish of Bolton le Moors began. A modern wall on Gladstone Street also shows this old border. The old building on Halliwell Road, which has been updated a lot, used to be a toll house. This is where people paid a fee to use the road.

The local church, St Peter's, was officially opened in 1840.

Where Does the Name Halliwell Come From?

The name Halliwell comes from an old spring called the "holy well." This spring used to be at the northern end of the area, near Smithills Croft Road. In Old English, an ancient form of the English language, it was called halig wella, which means "holy well." Over many centuries, the name was spelled in different ways. Some old spellings include Haliwalle (in 1220), Haliwell (in 1243), Harywal (in 1273), and Halewell (around 1277–8). In the old church records for Deane Parish, it was even spelled Halliwoe and Hollowell.

Local Football Team

Halliwell once had its own football team, Halliwell F.C.. They were one of the best teams in the area. They played their games at a field known as Holy Harbour. This old football ground is now covered by modern houses built in 1998 and 1999. These houses are social housing, managed by Irwell Valley. The two new housing areas on the old Holy Harbour land are called Rusheylea Close and Newlea Close.
