Where is Hamilton Located?
Hamilton is about 6 miles west of Leesburg, which is the main town of Loudoun County. It sits near the bottom of Catoctin Mountain.
The town is quite small, covering about 0.2 square miles (0.6 square kilometers) of land.
A Look Back: Hamilton's History
Long ago, different Native American tribes lived where Hamilton is now. European settlers started arriving in the 1730s.
From Harmony to Hamilton
In 1768, George and Tabitha Roach Tavenner built the first house in the area. Their son, Richard, and his wife, Ann Hatcher, later built a large home called Harmony. Because of this estate, the area became known as Harmony.
In 1831, a new road opened, connecting Leesburg to Snickersville. This helped the area grow. By 1833, there were enough people to build the Harmony Methodist Church. Richard and Ann Hatcher Tavenner gave the land for the church.
The town also became known as Hamilton Store. This was after Charles Bennett Hamilton opened a store there. In 1835, the United States government approved a post office inside Hamilton's store. From then on, the town was officially called Hamilton.
Civil War and Growth
The last important Civil War event in Loudoun County happened near Hamilton. It was called The Harmony Skirmish. On March 21, 1865, Confederate Colonel John S. Mosby and his soldiers surprised troops led by Colonel Marcus Reno.
By 1868, a steam railroad reached Hamilton from Alexandria. Many people from the city came to Hamilton to escape the summer heat. The town had a long boardwalk and a dance hall. By 1900, Hamilton was the second-largest town in Loudoun County. It had many busy businesses, like newspapers, a butcher shop, clothing stores, and even a broom factory.
Changes Over Time
When cars became popular, fewer tourists came to Hamilton. In 1926, a big fire destroyed many businesses in the town center. After this, tourism dropped a lot. Since then, Hamilton has mostly been a quiet place for people to live.
Hamilton also had a lively African-American community throughout its history.
Several historic buildings in Hamilton are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Hamilton Masonic Lodge, Janney House, William Smith House, Spring Hill Farm, and Sunnyside Farm.
Getting Around Hamilton
The main road that goes through Hamilton is Virginia State Route 7 Business. This road, also called Colonial Highway, runs east and west through the town. It connects Hamilton to Purcellville in the west and Leesburg in the east.
Virginia State Route 7 used to go through Hamilton, but now it bypasses the town to the north. You can use Route 7 to travel west to Winchester or east to Alexandria. Route 7 also connects to major highways like Interstate 66, Interstate 81, Interstate 395, and Interstate 495.
