Hangingstone Hill is a cool hill located in the northern part of Dartmoor in the southwest of England. This area is in the county of Devon. Standing at 603 metres (about 1,978 feet) high, it's one of the tallest peaks in Devon and on Dartmoor. It shares this spot with Cut Hill, which is about 4 kilometres (2.5 miles) to the southwest.

Exploring Hangingstone Hill

Hangingstone Hill offers amazing views on a clear day. You can see far across the landscape. Look out for Exmoor, the Quantock Hills, and even the River Teign estuary. Many other peaks of Dartmoor are also visible from the top.

Why You Can't Always Visit

A big part of Dartmoor is used as a military training area. This means that Hangingstone Hill is not always open to the public. It's important to check if the area is accessible before you plan a visit. There's a special military road that goes right up to the summit. At the top, you'll find an Army observation post and a flagpole.

How Hangingstone Hill Got Its Name

The name "Hangingstone Hill" comes from a special rock. This rock is a type of logan rock. A logan rock is a huge stone that is naturally balanced. It can be rocked back and forth with just a little effort. This particular logan rock is on the northwest side of the hill. However, it doesn't rock anymore. The hill was once known by a different name: Newtake Hill.

What is a Dewey?

Hangingstone Hill is one of Dartmoor's thirteen "Deweys." A Dewey is a type of hill classification. It's used for hills in the British Isles that are between 500 and 609.9 metres (1,640 and 2,001 feet) high. These hills must also have a "drop" of at least 30 metres (98 feet) on all sides. This means the land around them must fall by at least that much before rising again. Hangingstone Hill is also the tenth highest Dewey in England.

Nearby Peaks: Whitehorse Hill

About 600 metres (nearly 2,000 feet) south of Hangingstone Hill is another peak called Whitehorse Hill. This hill is considered a subpeak or a twin peak of Hangingstone Hill. This means it's very close and connected to the main hill. Its summit is only slightly lower, with a drop of less than 10 metres (33 feet) from Hangingstone Hill.
