Early Life and Education

Hans Linde was born on April 15, 1924, in Berlin, Germany. His father, Bruno Cohn Linde, was a lawyer. His family was Jewish. In 1933, when Hans was nine, his family moved to Copenhagen, Denmark. This was because of the difficult situation in Germany at the time.

In 1939, his family moved again, this time to Portland, Oregon, in the United States. Hans went to Lincoln High School in Portland. After serving in World War II, he continued his education. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Reed College in 1947. Then, he earned his law degree (J.D.) from UC Berkeley School of Law in 1950.

While in law school, he was a top student. He was part of special honor societies like Phi Beta Kappa. He also led the California Law Review, a major law journal. He became a licensed lawyer in Oregon in 1950.

Next, he worked as a lawyer for the United States Department of State. This department handles America's relationships with other countries. He also helped the U.S. team at the United Nations General Assembly. This was from 1951 to 1953.

From 1955 to 1958, he was a legislative assistant. He helped U.S. Senator Richard L. Neuberger with laws and government work.
