Hans Tilkowski (born July 12, 1935 – died January 5, 2020) was a famous German football player. He was a talented goalkeeper for the West German national team. Many people remember him for playing in the exciting 1966 World Cup final against England.

Playing Career Highlights

Hans Tilkowski was born in 1935 in Husen, a part of Dortmund, Germany. He started playing football at age 11 with a local team called SV Husen 19. Interestingly, he began as a right winger, not a goalkeeper!

Becoming a Goalkeeper

In 1949, Hans switched to playing as a goalkeeper. He then joined SuS Kaiserau. He started his professional football journey with this team in 1952.

Success with Westfalia Herne

In 1955, Hans Tilkowski joined Westfalia Herne. With this team, he helped them win the Oberliga West championship in 1959. This was a big achievement for the club.

Joining Borussia Dortmund

From 1963 to 1967, Tilkowski played for Borussia Dortmund. He played 81 matches in the top German league, the Bundesliga. During his time with Dortmund, he won two important trophies:

  • The DFB-Pokal (German Cup) in 1965.
  • The 1965–66 European Cup Winners' Cup in 1966. This was a major European competition!

In 1965, Hans Tilkowski was named German Footballer of the Year. Many people thought he was one of the best goalkeepers in the world during the mid-1960s.

Playing for West Germany

Hans Tilkowski first played for the West German national team in 1957. He was expected to be the main goalkeeper for the 1962 FIFA World Cup in Chile. However, the coach, Sepp Herberger, changed his mind just before the first match.

The 1966 World Cup Final

Under a new coach, Helmut Schön, Tilkowski became the main goalkeeper for the 1966 FIFA World Cup in England. The West German team made it all the way to the final! They played against the host country, England.

The final match was very exciting. England won 4–2, but one of the goals was very controversial. In extra time, England's player Geoff Hurst shot the ball. It hit the crossbar and bounced down. The defender Wolfgang Weber then cleared the ball away.

The referee, Gottfried Dienst, talked to the linesman, Tofiq Bahramov. The linesman said the ball had crossed the goal line, and the goal was given. This made the score 3–2 to England. Later photos showed that the ball probably did not fully cross the line.

Hans Tilkowski always believed the goal should not have counted. But he had a good sense of humor about it. In 2009, he even helped unveil a statue in Azerbaijan of Tofiq Bahramov, the linesman who made the call!

After the 1966 World Cup, Tilkowski played for West Germany for one more year. He then ended his playing career with Eintracht Frankfurt.

Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Hans Tilkowski became a football coach. He managed several clubs, including:
