Haslam is a small town and area in South Australia. It's located on the Eyre Peninsula, right by the coast of Streaky Bay. It's about 487 kilometers north-west of Adelaide, the state capital. The town of Streaky Bay is about 32 kilometers to the north.

Haslam is a popular place for campers to stop. Many people stay here when they are traveling across the Nullarbor Plain. The town doesn't have many big businesses or shops anymore. It mainly has a camping ground and a town jetty.

A Look at Haslam's Past

How Haslam Began

Haslam started in 1893 as a port. A port is a place where ships can load and unload goods. It was first called Port Carawa. Its main job was to bring tools and food to the people living nearby. It also helped send local products to other parts of South Australia. This shipping service ended in the 1960s when road transport became more common.

Naming the Town

The town of Haslam was officially announced on 9 October 1913. It was named after William Haslam. He was a politician who helped make laws for South Australia. He was part of the South Australian Legislative Council from 1891 until he passed away in 1898.

Post Office and Jetty

Haslam had a post office starting in 1913. It was first known as Port Haslam. Today, the area has a community postal agency for mail services.

The town's jetty was first built in 1912. It was very long, about 430 meters. This allowed ships to reach the coast easily. In 1972, the jetty was made shorter, by about half its original length.

Schools and Changes

The Haslam Township School opened in 1920. Its name was changed to "Maildaburra" in 1921. A new school building was built in 1930, and it was renamed "Haslam" again. The school closed in 1983 when a new school, Miltaburra Area School, opened near Wirrulla. The old Haslam school building is now a museum.

On 15 March 1934, the official area of the town was made larger. This included a special "police reserve." The official boundaries for the whole Haslam area were set on 12 April 2001.
