Hawthorne is a small town, called a borough, located in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. In 2020, about 19,637 people lived there. This was a small increase from the 2010 population of 18,791.

Hawthorne was created on March 24, 1898. It was once part of a larger area called Manchester Township. Other nearby towns like Haledon and North Haledon were also formed from this township. The borough was named after the famous writer Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Hawthorne is about 3.35 square miles (8.67 square kilometers) in total area. Most of this area is land, with a small amount of water.

Some smaller areas within Hawthorne include Goffle, North Hawthorne, and Van Winkle.

Hawthorne shares its borders with several other towns. In Passaic County, it borders North Haledon, Prospect Park, and Paterson. It also borders towns in Bergen County, such as Fair Lawn, Glen Rock|Glen Rock, Ridgewood, and Wyckoff.

Hawthorne is run by a Mayor and a seven-member Borough Council. This system is called the Mayor-Council government. The Mayor and Council members are elected by the people.

The Mayor serves a four-year term. The Council members also serve four-year terms. Four council members represent specific areas called "wards," and three are "at-large," meaning they represent the whole town.

As of 2023, the Mayor of Hawthorne is John V. Lane. His term ends on December 31, 2025.

Emergency Services in Hawthorne

Hawthorne has dedicated teams to keep its residents safe.

  • Police Department: The Hawthorne Police Department is led by Chief James W. Knepper. They have different units, including K-9 (police dogs) and traffic officers. They also run community programs like the Junior Police Academy.
  • Fire Department: The Hawthorne Volunteer Fire Department started in 1916. It is made up entirely of volunteers. They have five stations and different types of fire trucks and rescue vehicles.

Roads and Highways

Hawthorne has many miles of roads. The main state highway that goes through the borough is Route 208. Other important roads include County Route 504.

Public Transportation

NJ Transit offers train service at the Hawthorne station. You can take a train on the Main Line to places like Secaucus Junction and Hoboken Terminal.

NJ Transit also provides bus service. The 148 bus route goes to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan. There is also local bus service on the 722 route.

Community Life

Hawthorne is home to the Hawthorne Caballeros Drum and Bugle Corps. This group was started in 1946. They are a very successful all-age corps and have won many championships.
