Athletic Career
Early Wins and AAU Titles
Hayes Jones first became a champion in 1958. He won the 120-yard hurdles at the AAU championships. The AAU holds sports competitions for athletes. He won four more AAU titles. These included the 110-meter hurdles in 1960 and 1964. He also won the 120-yard hurdles in 1961 and 1963.
College and International Success
In 1959, Hayes Jones was a student at Eastern Michigan University. He won NCAA titles in the 120-yard and 220-yard hurdles. Before this, he had his first big international experience. He won the 110-meter hurdles at the Pan American Games.
Olympic Medals and World Records
A year later, at the Rome Olympics, he won a bronze medal. He finished third behind his teammates Lee Calhoun and Willie May. Many people thought this was his best performance. But he proved them wrong at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo. There, he won the gold medal in the 110-meter hurdles. His teammate Blaine Lindgren won the silver medal. Hayes Jones also ran on a 4 × 100-meter relay team. This team set a world record in 1961.
Life After Sports
After he stopped competing, Jones started a new career. In 1967, he became the director of recreation for New York City. He also worked for American Airlines. Later, he owned his own business. It was a baggage check-in service at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
Public Service
Leadership in Oakland County
From January 2005 to March 2006, Hayes Jones worked for Oakland County. He was the director of the Department of Economic Development & Community Affairs. This department helps the local economy and community.
Public Transportation Role
On July 1, 2007, Jones took on a new role. He became the General Manager of SMART. SMART stands for Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation. This is the public bus system for the Detroit suburbs in Michigan.
Personal Life
In 2003, Hayes Jones married Rhonda. They live in Pontiac, Michigan. Jones has two children and three grandchildren.
