Early Career and Achievements
Hayes Jones started his amazing career by winning the 120-yard hurdles at the AAU championships in 1958. He continued to win many more titles.
National and International Wins
- He won four more AAU titles. These included the 110-meter hurdles in 1960 and 1964. He also won the 120-yard hurdles in 1961 and 1963.
- In 1959, while representing Eastern Michigan University, Jones won two NCAA titles. He won both the 120-yard and 220-yard hurdles.
- That same year, he had his first big international experience. He won the 110-meter hurdles at the Pan American Games.
Olympic Success
At the Rome Olympics in 1960, Hayes Jones earned a bronze medal. He finished third behind his teammates Lee Calhoun and Willie May. Many people thought this was his best performance. However, he proved them wrong at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo. There, he won the gold medal in the 110-meter hurdles. His teammate Blaine Lindgren won the silver medal, making it a great day for the USA. Jones was also part of a 4 × 100-meter relay team that set a world record in 1961.
Life After Sports
After he stopped competing in track and field, Hayes Jones began a new career. In 1967, he became the director of recreation for New York City. He also worked for American Airlines. Later, he even owned his own business, a baggage check-in service at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

Hayes Jones has also been involved in public service and community work.
Community Leadership
- From 2005 to 2006, Jones was the director of the Oakland County Department of Economic Development & Community Affairs. This role involved helping the economy and communities in Oakland County.
- In 2007, Jones took on a new important job. He became the General Manager of SMART. SMART stands for the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation. This organization runs public transportation in the Detroit area.
Personal Life
In 2003, Hayes Jones married Rhonda. They live in Pontiac, Michigan. Hayes Jones has two children and three grandchildren.
