Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area is a special place in Maryland. It's recognized by the Maryland Heritage Areas Program. This area includes the famous Antietam National Battlefield and many other important sites from the American Civil War. Parts of Carroll, Frederick, and Washington counties are all part of this Heritage Area.

Maryland's Role in the Civil War

Maryland was a border state during the American Civil War. This meant it was located between the Union (the northern states) and the Confederacy (the southern states). Many people in Maryland, especially near Baltimore, wanted to join the Confederacy.

However, Maryland did not leave the Union. Leaders who supported the Union took steps to keep Maryland from joining the Confederacy. Federal troops also occupied some Maryland cities. Because of these actions, Maryland stayed with the Union.

Why Maryland Stayed with the Union

Most of Western Maryland and Central Maryland remained loyal to the Union. For example, in the summer of 1861, Maryland's government met in Frederick. At that time, Frederick was the biggest city in Maryland not controlled by Union forces.

Many of the lawmakers there wanted Maryland to leave the Union. But the pro-Union governor of Maryland took action to stop them. This prevented the government from voting to join the Confederacy.
