Hecla is a small city in South Dakota, United States. It's located in Brown County, very close to the North Dakota border. In 2020, about 193 people lived here. Highway 37 runs right by the east side of the city.

History of Hecla
Hecla was officially mapped out in 1886. It got its name from Hekla, a famous volcano in Iceland. A post office has been open in Hecla since 1886, helping people send and receive mail for over a century! Hecla was also the first place in South Dakota to have a special area dedicated to soil conservation. This means people worked together to protect the soil from erosion and keep it healthy for farming.
Geography and Location
Hecla is a small city, covering about 0.89 square kilometers (0.34 square miles) of land. There is no water area within the city limits.
The city of Hecla is surrounded by a larger area called the Civil Township of Hecla. This township includes parts of the land east of the James River. To the west of Hecla city, you'll find Liberty Township. It includes land both west and east of the James River.
