Helbeck is a very small settlement in the beautiful county of Cumbria, England. It's so small that it's also known as a civil parish, which is a local area with its own small government. You can find Helbeck close to the village of Brough, within the Eden district. A lovely forest called Helbeck Wood is also nearby. In 2001, only 19 people lived in Helbeck. By 2011, the population was so tiny that it was counted as part of the nearby Brough parish.
Helbeck's Past: A Journey Through Time
The name "Helbeck" has a cool meaning! It comes from an older name, "Hillbeck," which means 'Cave stream'. Imagine a stream flowing out of a cave – that's what the name suggests.
From Township to Civil Parish
Long ago, Helbeck was known as a township. A township was like a small part of a larger area, often linked to a main church parish. Helbeck was once a township within the bigger parish of Brough.
In 1866, something important happened: Hillbeck became its own civil parish. This meant it gained more independence in managing its local affairs. Think of it like a small community getting its own official status.
The Name Change
Later, on June 18, 1974, the name of the parish officially changed from "Hillbeck" to "Helbeck." This is the name we know it by today.
