History of Helena
How Helena Began
The Georgia General Assembly, which is like the state's law-making group, officially made Helena a town in 1890. No one knows for sure why the name "Helena" was chosen for this community.
Joining with McRae
By 2013, Helena faced challenges managing its city services. The city's water system was becoming too big to handle easily. If Helena had only given its water services to McRae, it would have lost many other important city functions.
So, the leaders of Helena and McRae decided to combine their cities. This idea was approved by law on April 10, 2014. At midnight on January 1, 2015, Helena and McRae officially became one city, now known as McRae-Helena.
