The Helianthella quinquenervis, also known as the fivenerve helianthella, is a cool plant from the sunflower family. It's a native of North America. You can find this plant growing in the mountains of the western United States and northern Mexico.

About the Fivenerve Helianthella

This plant is a type of herbaceous plant. This means it has soft stems, not woody ones like trees. It can grow quite tall, sometimes reaching up to 150 cm (4.9 ft), which is about 5 feet!

What it Looks Like

The leaves of the fivenerve helianthella are pretty big. They can be up to 50 cm (20 in) (about 20 inches) long. Each leaf has 3 or 5 strong veins that run all the way down its length. This is why it's called "fivenerve"!

Usually, each stem of the plant grows just one yellow flower head. This flower head often hangs down a bit, like it's nodding. Each head has 8 to 21 bright yellow ray flowers. These are the petal-like parts you see on the outside. In the center, there are many small yellow disc flowers.

Where it Grows

The fivenerve helianthella loves mountain areas. You can find it in places like the Rockies, the Black Hills, and the ranges of the Great Basin. It also grows in the northern Sierra Madre mountains. Its range stretches from Montana, Oregon, and South Dakota in the north. It goes all the way south to western Chihuahua and Coahuila in Mexico.
