People have lived in the area around Hemishofen for a very long time! Ancient grave sites, called Sankert, show that people were here during the Iron Age, around 800-600 BC.

The town of Hemishofen itself was first mentioned in writings around the year 1100. Back then, it was known as Hammingeshoven.

What's in a Name? The Coat of Arms

Every town has a special symbol called a coat of arms. It's like a unique picture that represents the town. Hemishofen's coat of arms is divided into two halves: one yellow and one red. On top of these colors, there's a green branch with five leaves growing from the bottom.

Important Places: Heritage Sites

The ancient Iron Age grave sites at Sankert are very important. They are listed as a Swiss heritage site of national significance. This means they are protected and recognized as a valuable part of Switzerland's history.

Exploring the Ancient Graves

These graves are found in a group of mounds (small hills built over graves) on the eastern edge of the Biber valley. People first discovered these graves in 1836. Over the years, many archaeologists and researchers have explored them, including Ferdinand Keller, Johann Conrad Fehrlin, Julius Müller, and Walter Ulrich Guyan.

There are at least 35 mounds in this group. Some of the graves contain items from the 8th to 6th Centuries BC, belonging to the Hallstatt culture. Other graves have items from the 5th and 4th Century BC, from the La Tène culture.

When people were buried, they were often placed with their personal belongings. These items included jewelry, things they used for eating, and even weapons. Many were also buried with food and drinks in ceramic pots. Because there have been so many excavations over the years, it's hard to know exactly which items came from which specific grave. The village where these ancient people lived is still a mystery; its location is unknown.
