Henri Emmanuelli (born May 31, 1945 – died March 21, 2017) was a French politician. He was a member of the French Socialist Party. He served as a deputy (a type of elected representative) for the Landes region for many years. He was a deputy from 1978 to 1981, then from 1986 to 1997, and again from 2000 until 2017.

About Henri Emmanuelli

Early Life and Education

Henri Emmanuelli was born in Eaux-Bonnes, a town in France. He grew up in a working-class family and lost his father when he was very young. He went to high school at Lycée Louis-Barthou in Pau. Later, he studied at Sciences Po in Paris, a famous school for political science.

Career as a Banker

In 1969, Henri Emmanuelli started working at the Compagnie Financière Edmond de Rothschild, a financial company. He quickly moved up in the company. By 1971, he was part of the management team. In 1975, he became a co-director. He worked as a senior banking executive until 1978. That year, at age 32, he was elected to the French National Assembly.

Political Journey

Joining the Socialist Party

Henri Emmanuelli joined the Socialist Party in 1971. At the request of François Mitterrand, a future French president, he ran for election in 1973. He became a deputy for the third electoral district of Landes in 1978. This election shifted the district's politics more towards the left.

Roles in Government

From 1981 to 1986, Emmanuelli held several important roles in the French government. He served in the governments led by Pierre Mauroy and Laurent Fabius.

  • From 1981 to 1983, he was the Secretary of State for Overseas Territories. These are French territories located outside mainland France.
  • From 1983 to 1986, he was the Secretary of State for Budget. This role involves managing the country's money.
  • From 1984 to 1986, he was also the Secretary of State for Consumption.

Leading the National Assembly

Between January 1992 and April 1993, Henri Emmanuelli served as the chairman of the National Assembly. This is a very important position, similar to the speaker of a parliament.

Leading the Socialist Party

In June 1994, he was elected as the First Secretary of the Socialist Party. This means he became the leader of the party. He held this position until October 1995. His election showed the strength of the Mitterrand group within the party. However, he was later defeated by Lionel Jospin in the race to become the party's candidate for the 1995 presidential election. Jospin then took over as the party's First Secretary.

Later Political Views

Henri Emmanuelli was a strong supporter of François Mitterrand throughout his life. He was known for being on the left-wing side of the Socialist Party. In 2002, he helped form a group called "New World" within the party. This group wanted to move the party further to the left.

In 2005, during the campaigns for the Referendum on the European Constitution, he publicly disagreed with his party. The Socialist Party supported the treaty, but Emmanuelli believed it was not good for the idea of a united Europe. He thought it moved away from the idea of a "Federal Europe," which he supported. He even wrote a document called "Plea for Europe." He continued to advocate for a Socialist Party that was strongly aligned with left-wing ideas.
