Henri Troyat, whose real name was Levon Aslan Torossian, was a famous French writer. He was born in Moscow, Russia, on November 1, 1911. His family had roots in Armenia.

When he was a young boy, his family had to leave Russia. They were worried about the Russian Revolution that was happening. After traveling for a long time, they finally settled in Paris, France, in 1920. Henri went to school there and later studied law.

A Talented Writer

Henri Troyat started winning awards for his writing when he was very young. He won his first literary prize, "le prix du Roman populaire," at just 24 years old. This was a great start to his career!

Just three years later, at age 27, he received the very important Prix Goncourt. This is one of the most famous literary awards in France. Winning it showed everyone how talented he was.

Books and Biographies

Throughout his life, Henri Troyat wrote more than 100 books. These included many novels and biographies. Biographies are books that tell the life story of a real person.

He wrote about many famous historical figures. Some of the people he wrote about include Anton Chekhov, Catherine the Great, Rasputin, Ivan the Terrible, and Leo Tolstoy. His books helped many people learn about these important figures.

The Mountain

One of his most well-known books is called La neige en deuil. This title means "Snow in Mourning." It was so popular that it was made into an English movie in 1956. The movie was called The Mountain.

Académie française

Henri Troyat was also a member of the Académie française. This is a very old and respected group in France that protects the French language. At the time of his death, he was the oldest member of this important academy. He passed away on March 2, 2007, at the age of 95.
