The Life of Henry Gritten
Henry Gritten's father was a picture dealer in London. Henry studied art and became friends with famous artists like David Roberts.
Early Art Career in England
Henry Gritten started showing his paintings in 1835. He exhibited his art at the Royal Academy in London. Over the next 10 years, 12 of his paintings were displayed there. He also showed many paintings at the British Institution from 1836 to 1848.
Painting in the United States
In 1848, Gritten traveled to the United States. He lived in Brooklyn, New York. He continued to show his art there. His paintings were displayed at the American Art Union from 1850 to 1851. He also exhibited at the National Academy of Design from 1850 to 1854.
Gritten painted two scenes from New Hampshire. These paintings were shown at the National Academy of Design. They were called "Kearsarge Mountain" (1850) and "Recollection of New Hampshire Scenery" (1851).
Moving to Australia
In 1853, Henry Gritten arrived in Australia. At first, he tried looking for gold in the Bendigo goldfields. But soon, he went back to painting. He created art in Victoria and Tasmania.
One of his paintings, "View of Hobart" (1857), is now at the National Library of Australia in Canberra. In 1870, his work was shown at the first exhibition of the Victorian Academy of Art in Melbourne. Henry Gritten died suddenly in Melbourne.

Henry Gritten was a talented painter of his time. He faced challenges while living in Australia. His artworks are kept in important collections today.
