About Henry Maull
Henry Maull was born in Clerkenwell, England, in 1829. His father was a tradesman, which means he owned a business or shop. Henry married Eliza, who was born in Islington in 1831.
In 1870, Henry Maull became a member of the Royal Photographic Society. This was a group for people who were very interested in photography.
Maull's Photography Businesses
Henry Maull worked with different partners during his career. These partnerships were like different photography businesses he ran:
- From 1856 to 1865, he worked with George Henry Polyblank. Their business was called Maull & Polyblank. Some records say they started in 1854.
- From 1866 to 1872, his business was known as Maull, Henry & Co.
- From 1873 to 1878, he ran a company called Maull & Co.
- From 1879 to 1885, he partnered with John Fox (1832–1907). Their studio was called Maull & Fox.
After 1885, the Maull & Fox studio continued under new owners. It moved to a new location in London. The studio officially closed its doors in 1928.

Henry Maull's Photography Work
Henry Maull created many important photographs during his career. He was especially known for his portraits.
Some of his key works include:
- Portraits of Members of Parliament: He took 163 photographs for a collection called Portraits of Members of Parliament by Maull and Polyblank.
- Portraits of Noted Individuals: Many of his pictures of famous people were turned into engravings. These were often printed in the Illustrated London News, a popular newspaper.
- Photographs of Fellows: He also photographed "Fellows" from different societies. These were important members of academic or professional groups. He took these photos from the mid-1800s to the early 1900s.
Famous Portraits of Celebrities
One of Henry Maull's most famous projects was a series called Photographic Portraits of Living Celebrities. This collection was published from 1856 to 1859. It featured forty individual portraits of famous people. Each portrait came with a short biography about the person.
The first parts of the series were written by Herbert Fry. Later parts were written by Edward Walford. The portraits were released to people who subscribed to the series over 41 months. Eventually, all the portraits were put together in one large book in 1859.
