History of Hertford

Hertford became an official town in 1758. It was chosen as the county seat for Perquimans County. The area was first home to the Yeopim Indians. Records show that a Yeopim chief sold land near the river in 1662.

One of the oldest brick buildings in North Carolina is in Hertford. It is called the Newbold-White House. Scientists have used tree rings to figure out that it was built in 1730.

In the early 1900s, Hertford was a busy town for cutting and selling wood. The nearby river helped move the wood. There used to be a special floating bridge across the river. When a boat needed to pass, parts of the bridge would unhook and float out of the way. After the boat passed, the bridge was pulled back into place. Today, there is a modern swing bridge that turns to let boats through.

Hertford is also famous as the hometown of Catfish Hunter. He was a very well-known baseball pitcher. Another famous person, disc jockey Wolfman Jack, is buried nearby. His record company is still in Hertford.

Many historic places in Hertford are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Church of the Holy Trinity, Cove Grove, and the Perquimans County Courthouse.
