Hillhouse, Hamilton facts for kids

Hillhouse is a large housing area located on the western side of Hamilton in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It's a place where many families live, with houses built by the local council.
About Hillhouse
Hillhouse is a big community, home to about 10,000 people. It's one of several housing areas in Hamilton. Long ago, this area was just a farm that led towards East Kilbride. When Hillhouse was first planned, it was actually meant to be part of the nearby town of Blantyre. However, a local council leader made a deal to give Hillhouse a Hamilton postcode. This helped get more money to build homes in the area.
Hillhouse has many useful places for its residents. There's a community center where people can meet, a library for reading and learning, and a church that hosts different clubs and groups. The Jock Stein Sports Centre and its playing fields offer great spaces for sports and activities.
There used to be an industrial area next to Hillhouse, which had a large factory belonging to Philips, a company that made lights. In the 1960s, this factory was very important, employing about 2,300 people and providing many jobs for the area. By 2015, the number of workers had become much smaller, and the factory has since closed. The land where it stood is now being used to build new houses.
The Burnbank Bowling Club is also located in Hillhouse. A famous football manager, Jock Stein, who grew up nearby, was the club's second champion in 1953. More recently, Margaret Letham, who won a gold medal in bowls at the 1998 Commonwealth Games, plays at this club.
One of the most well-known people from Hillhouse is Davie Cooper. He was a famous football player for Rangers and the Scottish national team. He grew up on Brankholm Brae in Hillhouse. Another notable person from the area is Reverend Scott J Brown, who grew up on Fleming Way and attended Udston Primary School. He later became a very important chaplain in the Royal Navy.
