The Himalayan cutia (Cutia nipalensis) is a beautiful bird that lives in the Himalayan mountains. It belongs to a bird family called Leiothrichidae. Its scientific name, Cutia nipalensis, tells us a bit about it. The name Cutia comes from the Nepali word for these birds. And nipalensis is a Latin word meaning "from Nepal," which is one of the places where this bird lives.
Where the Himalayan Cutia Lives
The Himalayan cutia makes its home across the Himalayan region. You can find it in countries like India, Nepal, and even as far as northern Thailand. There's also a similar type of cutia that lives in Peninsular Malaysia.
These birds prefer tropical and subtropical humid montane forests. This means they like forests that are warm, wet, and found on mountainsides. They don't live on the very highest mountain peaks. Instead, they prefer broadleaf forests, which have trees like oaks. You'll usually find them in the foothills, starting from about 1,500 meters (around 4,900 feet) above sea level. They rarely go higher than 2,500 meters (about 8,200 feet).
Conservation Status
The IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) keeps track of how many animals are left in the wild. The Himalayan cutia is not considered to be in danger. It is listed as a species of "Least Concern." This means there are still plenty of them around. For example, in Bhutan, it's quite common to see these birds.
